2017 is a big year for the Danganronpa series. The first two games made their way to the PlayStation 4, Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls showed up on the PlayStation 4 and PC, a tech demo made its way to the PlayStation VR worldwide and the third installment is showing up everywhere in every region this year. Know who’s great? Toko Fukawa from Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls. Well, she was great in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc too, but in the latest release she really gets the chance to shine as one of the stars. She’s someone you can really root for, even though she’s kind of a psychotic serial killer part of the time.

The original Danganronpa never scared me. The first two games, Trigger Happy Havoc and Goodbye Despair are unsettling and unnerving, but there’s a sense of detachment. You’re playing an adventure game with visual novel elements. The player is removed from the action, and there’s a sense of security that comes from that.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from the Danganronpa series, it’s that hope can be a powerful force that enables people to overcome some seriously scary situations. Hope is great. Also, never trust anyone under the age of about 18.
