Preview: There’s a lot for Sega fans to enjoy in Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Future Tone
Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Future Tone is a heaping helping of songs, bringing the robust lineup of the arcade version of the game to Western PS4s next week. As part of that, it’s a deep repository of the series’ crossovers with other Sega franchises! We’ve seen a bit of this stuff here and there in the games that made it here, but gathered like this? It’s really cool.
The most obvious connections you’ll see are in the game’s three big classic arcade covers, giving Vocaloid style to songs from OutRun, After Burner and Power Drift. All three keep very close to the source material, and the latter two even include some real animation work inspired by the games themselves! They’re joined by an MMO anthem inspired by Phantasy Star Online 2, as well as a song that has Len carrying around a modified Dreamcast controller.

Miku and her Vocaloid friends may not be Sega creations, but the games have no problems branding them as part of the team with special costumes. Miku gets the bulk of these costumes, as is true of costumes in general! She has both an Ulala module and one crafted to be as if Miku herself worked at a competing Space Channel. Along with those, she has a Sonic kit, a look modeled after Virtual-On‘s Fei-Yen, a Phantasy Star Online design for the MMO song and an homage to Valkyria Chronicles‘ Alicia. And hey! Atlus is part of the big happy Sega family these days, so you can also sport Miku’s look from Persona 4: Dancing All Night. (Which, frankly, you probably should play if you like Miku.)

Kagamine Rin and Len get a pair of costumes from a game you should play if you can: Valkyria Chronicles 3‘s Kurt and Imca. Rin can also look like Leanne from Resonance of Fate or Arle from the Puyo Puyo series, which will absolutely return to the West as long as we all close our eyes and believe really hard.
Kaito and Luka get Virtua Fighter costumes: Kage-Maru and Sarah Bryant, respectively. Luka also dresses up as protagonist Nagisa from Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity, or as we like to think of her, guest character Nagisa from Valkyria Chronicles 3. Meiko may have the most esoteric selection of them all, though: Lin Xiao-Mei from two Shining games for the PSP we never got and an operator from arcade cult hit Border Break.
We probably even missed a few more! Seriously, with over 200 songs and hundreds of modules, we’re still exploring everything it has to offer. We’ll have a full review of Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Future Tone before its launch next week.
